CHRISTMAS IN JUNE

I don't usually post about personal things or post about what I made for dinner even though many other bloggers do and I enjoy reading about it. But this overlaps. I was making a salad last night with an adorable purple cabbage I got at the farmers market that comes once a week to my neighborhood and I had these little discards. And all of a sudden I thought "Christmas Card!" Aren't they beautiful?

READING

When I started thinking about starting my own business, I started reading every book that i could get my hands on about it. I found that there are 2 kinds of "So, you want to start your own business" books. One is an inspirational account of how someone else has done it with few specifics. The other tends to be pretty specific, outlining the importance of sales, marketing and the like. I got to a certain point where I was over reading about everyone else, I wanted to get out there and do it.

Now, I realize that I still have so much to learn and I am actually at a place where I am ready to accept new ideas. Not that long ago, I can across this post by Grace of Design*Sponge. I immediately clicked over to amazon and ordered 3 of the books mentioned.

I am about halfway through "The E Myth Revisited" by Micheal E. Gerber and I already agree with Micheal and Douglas from Motel Deluxe. "This book changed my life"

Okay, so my life hasn't changed yet, I'm not even done with the book, but I can feel things shifting inside me. I mean, this book was written for me. (and every other entrepreneur out there.) I HIGHLY recommend this book to anyone that is starting or has started their own business. I honestly believe that it may be the difference between success and failure.

sorry, no pictures today, I'm too excited, I've got to get back to reading . . .

NEW PICTURES

You may know that I haven't been that happy with the pictures of my stationery. I have tried numerous times to improve them, researched how to take a good picture, and still have never been happy with them. I think that I really don't want to put in the time and effort that it deserves. I have so many items in my shop that the thought of going through and taking all the pictures and then posting each one just sounds crazy. I know that pictures are important especially on the internet, so I keep plugging on. And I think that I am finally happy with my pictures. Yay!

So etsy just turned 3 years old this week. They have a lot of articles about the first sellers on the storque which is their blog. I joined about a year after it started and honestly right now, I can't remember where i heard about it. Probably on a blog somewhere. Anyways, Happy Birthday Etsy! I love you and hope you have many many more.

MINTED HOLIDAY CONTEST

Minted has started these design contests that I think are just great. Designers enter as many designs as they like for free and then the public votes and comments on the designs. The winners are given cash prizes and then Minted sells those designs on their site and the designers get a cut of the sales. They did Save the Dates last time as their first competition and I participated in that one and was actually told that my design would be for sale on the site, but I haven't heard back from them, so that may be false information. Anyways, I did not enter their latest contest, Holiday Cards, only because time got away from me. I have picked out my top 10 from this contest and since I didn't enter, it's objective. You can see all the designs and vote here.

A LUAU & A DRESS SHOWER

My littlest friend is turning 2 in a few weeks and this is her Luau invite that I just finished up yesterday.

I also designed an invite for a Dress Shower that my cousin in throwing. Neither of us had never heard of one, I think they just decided that she needed some cute dresses more than anything (I mean who doesn't) and made it up. I am always amazed at how easily you can change the tone of something. I am showing 3 designs for this shower, my cousin hasn't picked one yet.

I love the simplicity and modern quality this one has.

This one is a little more preppy . . .

and this one is too cute! Which one is your favorite? Doesn't it make you want to throw a dress shower?

P IS FOR PRESS KIT . . . FINALLY

So I finally got a few press kits together for some contacts I made at the nss. Honestly, I have never seen a press kit in person, but I have researched them a little and just decided to go for it, hoping my ignorance would make it better and more creative. I wanted it to be in a different form than just a folder. I understand why people do a folder if you are going to send out 100, but I only needed 3, so I decided to make them special.

I based them off of an address file, with a tab for each letter. I them figured out a idea for each letter. For example: A is for About us and P is for Process and G is for Green. Those are my information tabs and then I did examples of what you can do with my stationery::

H is for the holidays

I is for Invitation

W is for Wedding. I then included blank stationery with tabs like M is for Mom and then it says "Your mom called, she wants to hear from you" and other cute things like that. I am really happy with them and with any luck, I'll get some press out of them.

THOUGHTS AND GLUE

Mind you, it doesn't say thoughts on glue. This is a post I started yesterday but lost in the world of the internet, but I'm glad because now I have a lot more to add to it. I would like to respond to this post about the nss. She gives me and my little blog some press which I am thankful for and she poses some questions about large trade shows and handmade products.

I thought, going into the nss, that I would be the most handmade and novice there. I thought that my newness would be so loud and that I would get funny looks. I was partially right. There is quite a large division between the big companies like Crane and other first timers like myself. For one thing, they group all the smaller companies together on one side of the convention and they put at the smaller companies in this part with narrower walkways and lower ceilings. I think this is one of the things that I disliked the most about the show. How is a retailer supposed to discover something new and exciting if they stay with the big companies? Why shouldn't it all be intermixed? I'm sure someone has a very good reason, but I'm not sure I agree. I happened to be in between the 2 which I'm not sure if that helped or not. On the one hand, I might have been "discovered" by someone that didn't mean to do so, but maybe I lost some people that would have been interested in me because they stayed to the "small company" side.

On the other hand, I was so encouraged and excited to meet so many others like myself. When you are at home alone trying to make a company all day, you kind of forget that there might be others like you. I was inspired to see what others are making by hand and they were excited to see what I make. No one said "oh, well I guess you can't do large volume", but maybe they were thinking it.

I left with so many decisions to make about my company and where it is going. Do I want to be Crane one day? I honestly don't know. I would love to continue having a hand in making everything that goes out the door, but I think that part of my creativity may suffer. I sometimes like time spent making is time taken away from moving forward and creating new things.

It is very hard for me to comment on the success of the show for Avie Designs. I think the amount of ideas, relationships, contacts, resources and fun made it worth while for sure. Traffic was down, but it was down for everyone and you can't do anything about that.

Okay, enough rambling, let's get to the glue. I have been making my own envelope glue for about a year now and I talked to a lot of people at the show about the recipe and how I do it. Since I don't believe in keeping secrets, here is my recipe and method.

This makes a fairly large batch, so reduce it if you only want to make a few envelopes::
I call it "the lick-y glue"

Ingredients:
3 cups vinegar
3oz lemon jello (1 box)
2.5oz original gelatin (2.5 boxes)

1. Mix all the dry jello together in a bowl
2. Bring the vinegar to almost a boil
3. Slowly pour in the jello, whisking to incorporate as you go

4. Make sure all the jello is fully incorporated and pour into plastic containers with lids. It's okay if you still have a few lumps, they will dissolve later.

P.S. It really smells. Don't breathe over the pot, you'll get vinegar in your eye and it will be annoying.

I pour the glue into a large plastic container for keeping. Depending on the weather, the glue will cool and become much like the consistency of jello you would eat. In the summer, here in Atlanta, the jello never fully cools. So the glue needs to be heated before application so that it will be absorbed by your applicator which will be the moistener tubes you can get at any office store for .99 each. So when I am ready to apply, I scoop out one or two spoonfuls into a smaller container and pop it in the microwave for anywhere from 30-60 seconds. You have to watch it or it will overflow. You want to take it out right when it starts to bubble a little.

Note:: the glue changes drastically with the weather and you have to learn to adjust with it. In the winter, your window of application time is much shorter because the glue becomes cool and therefor difficult to spread. There will be a lot of trial and error. I have been using it for a year and am still perfecting my system.

The image at the top of the post is the application & drying rack I built out of cardboard. The glue will dry on the envelopes in a few hours or less depending on the temp. Just touch them to see if they are still sticky. Drying overnight is best.

I obviously want to help, so please let me know if you have any questions about the glue and let me know how it goes!

FALL

I know that it probably isn't fall where you are. It certainly isn't here in Hotlanta. I am however, working on new fall designs today and I wanted to share with you my color palette. I also lost a post this morning and plan to try again tonight so check back.
