Okay kids, this was supposed to post yesterday but the internet and myself were having a difference of opinion. So the deal is that I need your help. I have been slowly working on redecorating my kitchen ever since we moved in. So here is a pic from the day we moved in nearly 5 years ago:
So the first few things we did were paint the walls and cabinets. We also added hardware to the cabinets:
And just this week we got our new counter top that I commissioned my stepfather to make us. I have wanted a wooden counter top for a while and when ours started to have a little water damage I figured it was time to replace it. He made it out of church pews that he found:
So we love our new counter and I am happy with the cabinet color. (it just needs to be touched up in some places, mainly under the sink) I just need your opinion on the back splash and wall color. We want to have a tile back splash we just don't know what to do. Lucky for me, I saw this post on Design Sponge yesterday and found some great ideas over at Modwalls. Here are a few I like:
I love subway tile and I love the way they have this one going vertically although I think red is too strong a color for me.
This one shows our color combo and I like the barely there blue or maybe green as in the next one:
I would love to be able to go with white subway tile but my appliances are cream. I don't really want cream tile. I also need any input you many have on a wall color because I want to change that too. Please help! I'm counting on you!
You know, I love the color in your Mums Calling Cards...bright, sort of orange/poppy color..and would look so good with the color of the cabinets and the appliances. Not too orange-y...don't want to look too 70's. But you got me on the backsplash...I am stumped...I will keep thinking and if I come up with something fabulous I will let you know! :)
ReplyDeleteFunny enough, I never even thought of anything in the orange family.
ReplyDeletethanks, it gives me another idea.

I was going to suggest a backsplash using tiles made from recycled bottles. I don't know who makes them or what it's called but I remember (back when I had real cable tv) watching one of those home makeover shows and the people wanted to make their house as eco-friendly as possible and there I was introduced to the concept of recycled bottle tiles. They're great because they come in different clear, blue, green tones. Just another option.
ReplyDeleteI do like the third photo of the light blue subway tile backsplash. Very serene and a great off-set to the darker cabinets.
As for wall color, I really can't say since photos are not enough to go on. If you find a great color in the orange family, it will definitely liven things up in the kitchen! Alternatively, I am suggesting some color in the aqua-blue family as that would complement the much lighter blue tiles as well as the dark cabinets and the wood counter top. I don't know how you feel about purple colors but that would give a nice sophisticated look to your kitchen. I would suggest a dark plum purple. Real purple scares me, I prefer other shades. Or, even a dark blue color, now that I've mentioned purple.
Have fun!
Shirley,
ReplyDeletethanks for all the ideas. That recycled bottle tile does sounds cool and will work with the decision I think we've made.
We're probably going with a very light blue or green in a glass tile and then we will paint the walls this very subtle gray that we already have in the hallway.
I'll be sure to post pictures!
