So I just finished All Souls by Christine Schutt the other night and picked up my next book just in time for the Holiday. (I'm heading out of town this evening!)
I have read some great reviews of this book and it was a finalist for The Pulitzer Prize and The National Book Award so I really wished that I had liked it more. There were parts that I did like. Schutt's rhythm in this book is hard to fall in to but once you do it almost becomes more powerful than the words. She sets up very small, sometimes only a paragraph, vignettes that jump between the various characters of which there are a lot.
The plot is light with an emphasis on how these characters, senior girls at an elite Manhattan private school, are dealing with the fact that one of their classmates has cancer.
I'm not really sure why I didn't like this book. Maybe it's because I don't really identify with the elite of Manhattan or senior girls or anorexics or girls with Cancer for that matter. Even though I found Schutt's writing to be delightful at times, the book didn't speak to me.
This book actually disproves my theory that any book about any subject is interesting to read if it is well written. Please don't let me discourage you from reading it as I have read so many great reviews that people must really like it.
So on to book three as I embark on the holiday:
