DIY COASTERS & TRIVETS

Today we have another DIY project from Mamie. This is a fun, easy summer project to bring color to a room and also makes an inexpensive gift. You can whip these up in an hour or two and the color & design possibilities are endless!

Supplies:

8 x 11 sheets of felt
scissors
knife
fabric glue
pen
ruler
cutting mat
thin sheets of cork (from Ikea place mats)

Step 1: Use the ruler and pen to draw 4 in. x 4 in. squares in the cork. Cut the squares using the cutting mat, knife and ruler.

Step 2: Cut out shapes using the knife and cutting mat. I preferred free form shapes, so, I did not draw the shapes beforehand. The cork does not lend itself well to circular shapes so I chose rectangle and square shapes. Be aware that the cork can be difficult to work with. Be patient, cut slowly and practice beforehand on extra cork. Due to the texture of the cork, the shapes will not be perfect but that adds to the charm of the coasters.

Step 3: Using glue, attach the cork to the felt. Decide beforehand if you want a border of felt on the outside of the coaster or for the coaster to be flush with the edge. Then, using scissors, cut the excess felt.

Step 4: (optional) If the cork is thin and causes the coaster to be flimsy, you can add another square of cork on the other side of the felt.

Step 5: With the left over felt, use the same steps above to make trivets in various sizes.

Thanks Mamie!
