This summer we have been transforming my 14 year old sister's room from bunk beds to that of a high school-er. Her current bulletin board is the inspiration for this project as it is exploding with letters and pictures and cannot hold another thing. My mom decided to be proactive in saving the walls, so we decided to make a massive board for her to hang things on rather than the walls of her room. We'll show a picture of all her stuff on the new board when she gets back from camp and relocates everything.
Supplies:
1 sheet of 3/4 inch Foamular (found at Home Depot)
fabric
straight pins
staple gun
staples
3M medium picture hanging strips
scissors
a nice person at Home Depot to cut your Foamular
ribbon
This project was adapted from Martha Stewart's Encyclopedia of Sewing and Fabric Crafts.
1: Lay fabric on the ground with the back side facing up. Place the piece of foamular (that the nice person at Home Depot has already cut for you) onto the fabric. Cut the fabric 3 inches from each side.
2: Using the staple gun, staple one side of the fabric to the foamular. Next, staple the opposite side. Before stapling, be sure to pull the fabric taut. Stand the board up and check to see if the fabric is taut and not drooping. The staples can be removed fairly easy if you need to restaple. Repeat for the other two sides. For the corners, fold the fabric where it is smooth and flat before stapling.
3: Attach ribbon to the sides, adhering with glue or using straight pins. We couldn't decide whether we wanted to attach molding later, so we using straight pins to attach the ribbon in case we changed our minds.
4: Using the picture hanging strips, attach to the wall.
Tips:
We liked the look of the stripes and we already had the fabric which happened to match her room. However, you have to be extra careful when stapling in order for your stripes to not be crooked.
Know before you buy your foamular, what size you would like your bulletin board to be. The sheet is very large and we were able to make two bulletin boards from one sheet. The man at Home Depot was very helpful in cutting this for us there. We would not have been able to fit the board in the car otherwise.
Use longer staples in order for the fabric to be more secure.
Be looking next week for a picture of the finished product with all the stuff relocated!
